Dr. Peter Centre Honoured by Three Nominations and an Award at AccolAIDS

AccolAIDS 2007

Dr. Peter Centre representatives, nominees, and winners at 2007 AccolAIDS Awards Gala (L to R): Fred James - Board Chair, Dianne Simpson - 'Unsung Hero' nominee, Nathan Fong - 'Philanthropy' winner, Maxine Davis - Executive Director, David Paperny - 'Media' nominee and CBC's Dr. Peter Diaries producer.

The Dr. Peter Centre took centre stage at 6 th Annual AccolAIDS Awards Gala on April 22nd, an event honouring achievements of organizations, businesses, groups and individuals that have taken action in response to AIDS in British Columbia and those affected by the disease. Local foodie Nathan Fong won in the Philanthropy category for his three years of work on Passions, an annual culinary event benefiting the Dr. Peter Centre.

The Dr. Peter Centre was featured in two other AccolAIDS nominations. In the Media category, CBC Television was nominated for 'Dr. Peter Diaries', the 111 episode Academy Award nominated documentary of Dr. Peter Jepson-Young's journey living with HIV/AIDS. And Dr. Peter Centre therapies coordinator Dianne Simpson was nominated in the Unsung Hero category. This adds to the Centre's 2004 AccolAIDS award for Innovative Programs.

"To have such a strong presence at this year's AccolAIDS was a great honour, especially given this year marks the 15th anniversary of the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation," states Maxine Davis, Executive Director at Dr. Peter Centre. "Nathan so deserves an award for the brilliant job he's done orchestrating Passions. And to have the CBC and our own Dianne Simpson recognized as well is outstanding. The work these people do not only helps us continue the mission of caring for those with HIV/AIDS, it changes peoples' lives."

The Dr. Peter Centre banners that adorned the Granville Street Bridge during August and September are now available for purchase. Personally autographed by artist Tiko Kerr , all proceeds are going to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.

The vibrant banners of Tiko Kerr 's Dr. Peter Centre painting served as a visual marking not only those whose lives have been impacted by AIDS, but also the pioneering role that Vancouver played in the last decade since it caught the world's attention with the breakthrough in life extending HIV drug therapies announced at the International AIDS Conference held here. In addition, the Dr. Peter Centre is approaching its ten year anniversary. As the only HIV/AIDS day health and 24-hour care residence in BC, the Dr. Peter Centre offers care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.

"It was truly amazing to see my painting of the Dr. Peter Centre come to life on the Granville Street Bridge this summer", states artist Tiko Kerr . "And I'm especially proud that monies from the sale of the banners will help the Dr. Peter Centre support people living with HIV/AIDS in the community."

A limited number of autographed Dr. Peter Centre street banners are now available at a cost of $250.
