RECREATION THERAPIST (RELIEF) - Downtown Vancouver

The Dr. Peter Centre is an HIV/AIDS day health program and 24-hour care residence. The majority of clients also struggle with a range of concurrent disorders, including substance use and psychiatric diagnoses. The Recreation Therapy department is part of a multidisciplinary team that works in accordance with the principles of self-empowerment, harm reduction and the therapeutic community model.

Position Description:

The relief Recreation Therapist works directly with clients and is responsible for the implementation and evaluation of recreation programs that meet participants' needs and interests. The Recreation Therapist will also participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, bringing participant issues and behaviour management issues to the group.

Preferred personal qualities are the ability to be proactive, genuine, engaging, and to have a good sense of humour. The Recreation Therapist will demonstrate empathy, self-initiative, enthusiasm and a positive attitude. The preferred applicant will also be able to demonstrate effective clinical writing skills.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • Valid CPR C certificate, Valid class 4 BC drivers license, Fitness Certificate
  • Experience and education in AIDS, multi-diagnosis care, mental health, corrections or addiction settings
  • Skills in conflict resolution, behaviour management and restorative justice
  • Knowledge and ability to integrate harm reduction theory into Therapeutic Recreation practice.

Qualifications:

Eligible for professional standing with British Columbia Therapeutic Association and Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association. Work experience utilizing a wide range of modalities with persons who have disabilities and additional training and education relevant to the population would be an asset.
